AI Repair vs CCleaner for Mac: which one do you need?
CCleaner is one of the best-known cleaner apps, especially on Windows. Its Mac version, from Gen Digital, clears junk files and browser data, finds duplicates and removes apps. AI Repair is a different kind of app: an AI troubleshooter that finds the cause of the problem you describe and fixes it with tested repairs. We make AI Repair, so we’ve kept to facts from CCleaner’s own pages, and we say where CCleaner is the better choice.
In short
Choose CCleaner for Mac if you want a simple, largely free tool to clear junk, browser data and duplicates, and to remove apps. Choose AI Repair if something is wrong, like a slow Mac, a printer that won’t print, Wi-Fi with no internet, battery drain or a full disk, and you want the cause found and fixed, with your OK before each change. Remember that CCleaner’s best-known Windows features, the registry cleaner and driver updates, don’t exist on a Mac.

What CCleaner does well
- A useful free version. Cleaning, browser cleaning, duplicate and large-file finders, an uninstaller and a startup list cost nothing.
- Browser privacy. It clears browsing history, cookies and cached pages in several browsers in one go.
- Removing apps from one list, without hunting for them in Finder.
- Duplicates and photos. It finds duplicate files, and the paid version flags blurry and similar photos.
What AI Repair does differently
- It starts from your problem. Type “my Wi-Fi is connected but nothing loads”, and it checks your address, DNS, router and signal, then tells you in plain words what’s wrong.
- It fixes more than files. Resuming a paused printer, renewing your network address, turning on Low Power Mode, quitting the app that’s slowing your Mac.
- Only tested repairs. The AI picks from a fixed catalog of repairs we wrote and tested. It can’t run commands, scripts or code of its own.
- You stay in charge. Each change waits for your OK unless you’ve set that kind of fix to Auto, risky ones always ask, and the card says whether a change can be undone.
CCleaner’s Windows features on a Mac
Many people know CCleaner from Windows, where it also cleans the registry and updates drivers. A Mac has no registry, and the driver updater belongs to the Windows version, so neither is part of CCleaner for Mac. If you’re choosing an app for a Mac, compare what each Mac app does, not the Windows version you remember.
Which one should you choose?
- You want to clear browser history and cookies regularly, or remove apps cleanly: CCleaner.
- You want something free for occasional tidying: CCleaner’s free version, or macOS’s own Storage settings, covered in our storage guide.
- Something isn’t working, a printer, the Wi-Fi, the battery, a Mac that’s suddenly slow: AI Repair, which finds the cause and fixes it.
Common questions
Is AI Repair an alternative to CCleaner on a Mac?
For fixing problems, yes. For clearing browser data, finding duplicates or removing apps, no: AI Repair doesn’t do those. If your Mac works fine and you just want to tidy up, CCleaner’s free version or macOS’s own tools are enough.
Does CCleaner for Mac clean the registry?
No. The registry is part of Windows; a Mac doesn’t have one. The registry cleaner and driver updater belong to CCleaner’s Windows version.
Will CCleaner make my Mac faster?
It can help if your disk is nearly full or too many apps open at login. Most slow Macs, though, have a busy app, too little memory for what’s open, or heat behind them. Our guide Why is my Mac so slow? shows how to find out.
